So you’ve been playing Magic — maybe for twenty years, maybe for twenty minutes — and somebody at the table mentions "Phyrexia" or "the Mending" and everyone nods gravely while you smile and pretend. Been there. When I came back to the game after two decades away, I realized I only half-knew the story I’d grown up inside of. So I went back and learned it properly, and then I wrote it all down the way I’d tell it to a buddy at game night.

This is the hub for the whole series. Six parts, one continuous story, spanning thousands of in-world years — from an ancient civilization’s fall to the era your current cards are printed in. No homework required, no lore knowledge assumed, and I promise it’s more Godfather than textbook. Grab a coffee and start at the top.

The Series

Part 1: Before the Villain Was a God — Yawgmoth and the Fall of the Thran
Magic’s greatest villain starts out as a doctor. It gets worse from there. The ancient Thran civilization, the invention of compleation, and the birth of the machine hell called Phyrexia.

Part 2: Two Brothers, One Broken Stone — The War That Shattered a World
Urza and Mishra grab the same shiny rock at the same time and doom a continent. The Brothers’ War, the corruption of Mishra, and the blast that turned a grieving man into an immortal planeswalker.

Part 3: The Immortal’s Grudge — Urza’s Four-Thousand-Year Revenge Plan
Urza storms hell solo (it goes badly), hunts sleeper agents, and spends centuries building a living skyship — and, more disturbingly, building a person — for the war he knows is coming.

Part 4: When Hell Came to Dominaria — The Invasion and the Fall of Yawgmoth
The big one. The Weatherlight crew, the Phyrexian Invasion, billions dead, and a god slain by the Legacy Weapon. If you played in the early 2000s, this was the story in your binder.

Part 5: One Drop of Oil — Karn’s Mistake and the Birth of New Phyrexia
The monster isn’t dead. The kindest character in the saga unknowingly carries the plague to a world he built himself, and Phyrexia comes back in all five colors.

Part 6: The Multiverse Fights Back — From the Mending to the Age of Omenpaths
Planeswalkers become mortal, New Phyrexia invades everything at once, and the Multiverse wins by doing the one thing two brothers never could: sharing. This is the era modern Magic lives in.

A Few Notes Before You Dive In

This series covers the game’s central saga — the Phyrexian arc that runs like a spine through thirty years of Magic. It is not everything; whole planes, characters, and side stories (Innistrad’s gothic horror, Ravnica’s guilds, Bolas’s schemes) get a nod at most. If folks enjoy this series, I’ll happily do deep-dives on those next — tell me in the comments what you want covered.

I’ve cross-checked the story against official sources, but lore this old has fuzzy edges and the occasional retcon, so where the record is ambiguous, I say so. And if you catch me getting something wrong, you have my full dad-blessing to correct me. That’s what game night buddies are for.
