The One Secret Lair I’m Actually Telling You to Buy

A week ago I wrote a whole post warning you about Secret Lair FOMO — the limited windows, the shiny reprints, the marketing engineered to raid your hobby budget at 12:15 on a Tuesday. Well, another Secret Lair email landed in my inbox today, and this time I’m doing a full one-eighty. This one, I’m telling you to consider buying. Let me explain why this drop is different.

Their Magic Is Limitless

The drop is called Their Magic Is Limitless, a partnership between Wizards and Global Fund for Women, one of the world’s leading foundations for gender justice, supporting grassroots organizations around the world. It celebrates the women of Magic on every level — the characters on the cards, the women artists who painted them, and the women on the Wizards creative team who built the whole thing. From what Wizards shared, the project even doubled as a mentorship program inside the studio, with veteran creatives guiding newer team members through leading a product from vision to shelf. That’s a genuinely cool thing to bake into a card drop.

It runs July 20 through August 3, and here’s the number that matters: fifty percent of the product price goes directly to Global Fund for Women. Not "a portion of proceeds" buried in fine print. Half. And if you think that’s just marketing fluff, there’s precedent — a previous Wizards charity drop with the Latinx arts organization NALAC surpassed a million dollars raised. These things move real money to real causes.

Why My FOMO Rules Don’t Apply Here

Remember my rule from the last Secret Lair post? If you only want it because it’s shiny and disappearing soon, that’s the FOMO talking. Two things defuse that entirely here.

First, this drop is printed to demand. Nobody’s racing anybody. Every copy ordered in the window gets made, so there’s no artificial scarcity, no scalper feeding frenzy, no 9am queue panic — take your time, decide calmly, order if it’s for you. (There is still a pre-queue system at launch for site traffic, but that’s logistics, not scarcity.)

Second, the usual Secret Lair math — "you’re paying a premium for art on cards you could buy cheaper" — reads completely differently when half the price is a donation. You’re not overpaying for foil. You’re buying art and giving to a cause, on purpose, and getting some genuinely striking cards as the receipt. From the preview images, we’re talking staples like Sol Ring and Path of Ancestry in bold new treatments — cards that slot into basically any Commander deck, so nothing goes to waste in a binder.

The Dad Verdict

I’m raising kids in a house where the game night table is for everybody. The message this drop sends — that Magic’s history and future are full of powerful women, on the cards and behind them — is one I’m glad to have sitting on my table where my kids can see it.

So here’s my honest guidance, same framework as always, different conclusion: if the budget’s tight this month, skip it guilt-free — charity drops come around again. But if you were going to treat yourself to something this summer, this is the rare Secret Lair where the wallet-whisper and the conscience agree. Mark July 20, order calmly sometime in the two-week window, and feel good about it. That’s not FOMO. That’s just a good purchase.
