When we left off, the machine-god Yawgmoth was sealed behind a door in the desert, waiting five thousand years for somebody to knock. This is the story of the two brothers who knocked. If you only ever learn one piece of Magic lore, make it this one — it’s the wound the entire rest of the story grows out of.

The Dig Site That Doomed a Continent

Urza and Mishra were brothers born on Dominaria, a year apart, both prodigies. As kids they studied under an archaeologist named Tocasia, excavating ancient Thran ruins — which, as you’ll recall from Part 1, is a bit like children playing in a sealed nuclear facility. On a dig at the Caves of Koilos, the brothers found the powerstone. The one holding the door to Phyrexia shut. Neither knew that. Both grabbed for it at once.

It snapped in half.

Urza’s half became known as the Mightstone, Mishra’s the Weakstone. And with that one crack, two things happened: each brother now held immense power, and the seal on hell was broken. Each brother, of course, immediately wanted the other’s half. Some sibling rivalries are about toys. This one ended civilizations.

Decades of Machine War

The falling-out turned into a cold war, then a hot one. Urza became chief artificer of one kingdom; Mishra rose to lead a rival empire. And because both men were the greatest machine-builders of their age, this wasn’t a war of swords — it was a war of engines. Clockwork soldiers. Dragon machines. Two brothers strip-mining an entire continent to out-build each other for decades. The land itself was dying to feed their arms race, and neither could stop, because stopping meant the other brother won.

Meanwhile, remember that open door? Yawgmoth sent a scout through — a demonic Phyrexian named Gix — whose job was simple: whisper in both brothers’ ears and pour gasoline on the fire. He found his mark in Mishra. Slowly, secretly, Mishra was corrupted, remade, fused with Phyrexian machinery under his skin. By the end, the man was gone. Urza just didn’t know it yet.

The Blast Heard Across the Multiverse

It ended on the forested island of Argoth, both armies grinding each other to nothing. And there Urza finally saw what his brother had become — metal under torn flesh, a Phyrexian thing wearing Mishra’s face. Something in Urza broke. He held an ancient Thran doomsday device called the Golgothian Sylex, and he poured everything he was into it.

The Sylex Blast annihilated both armies, sank Argoth into the sea, wrecked the climate so badly it eventually triggered a global Ice Age — and ignited something latent inside Urza: a planeswalker spark. He died in that fire and was reborn as something more, an immortal being who could walk between worlds. The Mightstone and Weakstone? They became his eyes.

So now we have an immortal, brilliant, deeply traumatized artificer who knows exactly who corrupted his brother — and has literally all of time to plan his revenge. Next time: Urza versus hell itself. It goes worse than you’d think.
