So I just wrapped a six-part series walking through Magic’s whole saga — Yawgmoth, the Brothers’ War, New Phyrexia, all of it — and I ended on the hopeful Age of Omenpaths, where the Multiverse finally learned to share. Well, friends, I have news: the next in-universe set is called Reality Fracture, and judging by that title, the sharing is about to stop going smoothly. The story I told you isn’t history. It’s ongoing. And we’re all about to watch the next chapter drop.
What We Know (and Carefully, What We Don’t)
Wizards is holding details close until the big MagicCon Amsterdam panel on July 17 — literally titled "Reality Fracture and the Future of the Magic Multiverse" — so I’ll be honest about the line between confirmed and chatter. Confirmed: the set exists, it’s the next chapter of the in-universe story, and Wizards considers it important enough to anchor their biggest panel of the summer and pair it with announcing all three 2027 Multiverse sets.
The chatter, which I’ll clearly flag as the rumor mill: the story reportedly centers on Jace — Magic’s brooding blue mind-mage and longtime main character — and some kind of attempt to reset the Multiverse itself. If that’s even half true, the stakes are the biggest since the Phyrexian invasion I covered in Part 6. Could be wrong on the specifics! But a set called Reality Fracture is not about everyone having a nice picnic.
Why Returning Players Should Actually Care
Here’s my pitch to my fellow lapsed-and-returned folks who usually skip the story stuff. The single best thing about coming back to Magic in this era is that the lore is live. When I played in the early 2000s, the Weatherlight Saga was unfolding in real time and I barely understood it — I just knew the cards in my binder felt like pieces of something huge. They were! I wrote six posts about it!
This is that same feeling, except now you can actually follow along. The story publishes for free on Wizards’ site, every set moves it forward, and if you’ve read my series you now have the full context: you know who Jace’s predecessors were, you know what happens when someone tries to reshape reality (ask Urza how the Sylex worked out), and you know the Multiverse has barely finished healing from the last apocalypse. Watching a new crack form in that fresh plaster hits different when you know the house’s history.
The Dad Take
My honest emotional state: cautiously giddy. The in-universe sets are where Magic’s heart lives, and after a year heavy on crossovers, a big swing-for-the-fences Multiverse story is exactly what I want. My kids have superheroes; give Dad his weird wizard drama.
