The MagicCon Amsterdam Preview Panel happened Friday night, and Wizards did exactly what they promised: named all three in-universe sets for 2027, live on stage, in one breath. I watched the recap over Saturday coffee like the domesticated creature I am, and friends — next year looks stacked. Here’s the roadmap, dad-annotated.
The Three Planes of 2027
Nauctis: The Sunken Realm kicks off the year, and it’s the one true unknown — an entirely new plane, and from the name and early chatter, an underwater one. What makes it extra interesting: it reportedly picks up the story directly from this October’s Reality Fracture, so whatever Jace breaks this fall, we apparently go swimming in the wreckage. A brand-new underwater world as the opening act of a new story era? I’m in.
Kamigawa: Titanbreach lands June 4, 2027, and this is the crowd-pleaser — a return to the plane that pulled off one of Magic’s great glow-ups, going from early-2000s underdog (my era! I opened those packs!) to the beloved neon-and-spirits cyberpunk world of Neon Dynasty. Whatever a "Titanbreach" is, it sounds enormous and I’d like to block it with a 1/1 for comedy.
Zhalfir closes the year on October 1, 2027, and it’s the emotional one. Longtime players know Zhalfir as the kingdom that was lost — phased out of existence for ages and finally restored as its own plane. Now it gets a whole set, rooted in afrofantasy, with Teferi returning home and what Wizards teases as "mind-bending cards." Time magic plus a nation reclaiming its place in the Multiverse? That’s the set I’ll be reading every story chapter for.
The Rapid-Fire Extras
The panel wasn’t done. Also announced: Mystery Booster: Commander Edition (chaos packs, but Commander — say less), a Reality Fracture Secret Lair, and — I promise I’m not making this up — a Stardew Valley Secret Lair. The cozy farming game. On Magic cards. My whole household made an audible noise.
On the events side, 2027 brings four MagicCons: Detroit in February, Tokyo in May, Las Vegas in August, and Amsterdam in December — a genuinely global calendar now — plus a Limited Championship in Minneapolis next June and the return of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame.
Notably absent: the 2027 Universes Beyond sets. Wizards only named the in-universe half of the year, and the rumor mill points at San Diego Comic-Con later this month as a possible venue for the crossover reveals. We’ll see — from what I’ve noticed, that’s informed speculation, not a promise.
The Dad Take
Here’s what has me happiest: after a year where the crossovers grabbed every headline, 2027’s announced slate is all Magic’s own worlds — a new plane, a beloved return, and a restored kingdom. That’s the balance I ranted about wanting months ago. The firehose isn’t slowing down, but at least half of next year’s water is coming from the home well. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have eleven months to convince my family that an underwater vacation to Nauctis counts as a trip.
