Consider this the promised Part 7 of my lore series — the payoff post I’ve been teasing since July. The Reality Fracture story is more than half published, the finale drops this Friday, September 11, and the debut stream gave us enough of the shape to talk about it properly. If you read the six-part saga on this blog, you already have all the context you need. If not, go do that — I’ll wait. Alternate realities are patient.

What Jace Actually Did

Here’s the setup, spoiler-light. After the Phyrexian invasion nearly ended everything, Jace Beleren — the mind-mage who’s been modern Magic’s main character for over a decade — decided the Multiverse itself was the problem. Too much suffering baked in. So he set out to rewrite it: a reality free of pain, engineered by the smartest telepath alive. And in pursuing that, he did something only Jace would do — he split himself into multiple versions, with a cold, controlling version calling himself The Theorist locking many of the others away.

If you read my Part 6, you’ll recognize the pattern immediately. Urza tried to fix reality with a bomb. Jace is trying to fix it with his mind, and he’s fractured into pieces doing it. Thirty years of Magic story keep landing on the same lesson: the person who believes they alone can perfect the world is the most dangerous character in the room, no matter how good their intentions. The set’s title isn’t about a broken Multiverse. It’s about a broken Jace.

Why the Story Is Worth Your Time This Week

Wizards is publishing this as a ten-episode arc on their site, free, with a preview card attached to every episode — the first half is up now and the conclusion lands Friday. For returning players who usually skip the fiction: this is the one to read, because it’s the ending of a story that’s been running since 2023 and the doorway into next year’s brand-new plane, Nauctis, which reportedly picks up directly from whatever happens on Friday. You’re not reading a side story. You’re reading the hinge of the next era.

And for parents: the "what if" premise is a shockingly good conversation starter with kids. Every mirrored pair in the set is a little thought experiment — what if this hero made the other choice? My kids have opinions. Loud ones.

The Full Fall Calendar

Because the fall is dense, here’s the dated rundown from the debut: previews run through September 17, full card gallery September 18, story finale September 11, prerelease September 25 to October 1, Arena release September 29, tabletop release October 2, Commander Party events at your LGS in two rounds (October 9–15 and October 23–29), and a Magic Spotlight event in Hartford, Connecticut on October 23–25. Oh, and the next banned and restricted announcement hits October 12, ten days after release — the week-one physical is now tradition.

My plan: read the finale Friday morning with coffee, prerelease on the 25th with the eight-year-old, and a Commander Party in October because it’s the most family-friendly in-store event Magic runs. The Multiverse is about to get rewritten, friends. Let’s find out which version of Jace wins — and which version of reality we’re all living in come October.
