I sat down with my coffee this morning to figure out what’s happening in Magic this month, and friends, I had to get a second coffee. The stretch from now through July 20 might be the densest run of Magic events, sales, and announcements all year. So I did the dad thing: I made you a calendar. Clip this to the fridge.
This Week: The Competitive Warm-Up
The engine starts turning immediately. Arena’s Best-of-Three Qualifier Play-In hits July 10, followed by the Qualifier Weekend on July 11–12, all in Marvel Super Heroes Sealed. If you’ve ever been curious what the on-ramp to high-level Arena play looks like, this is it — and even if you’re strictly a spectator like me, the Sealed format means you’ll see the new Marvel cards in their most level playing field.
Then comes the one every budget player should circle: the MTG Arena Store’s annual summer sale kicks off Tuesday, July 14, with details dropping the day before. If you’ve been sitting on gems or waiting to grab cosmetics or bundles, this is historically the time to hold your wallet shut until the discounts land. Consider this your official dad-permission to not buy anything on the 13th.
The Big Weekend: July 17–19
This is the main event. MagicCon Amsterdam runs Friday through Sunday, and it’s carrying an absurd payload: the Pro Tour with $500,000 on the line, the Preview Panel on July 17 revealing Reality Fracture details plus all three 2027 in-universe sets, the Secret Lair Reveal-a-Thon that same Friday, and the "There and Back Again" panel on July 18 kicking off spoiler season for The Hobbit set. I’ve written whole posts about several of these, so I won’t re-hype them here — just know that Friday and Saturday of that weekend will produce more news than some entire months.
Oh, and Arena isn’t sitting the weekend out either: the second Marvel Sealed Arena Direct runs July 17–26, with actual Play Booster boxes on the line for big win streaks. Same caveat as last time — treat entry-fee events as entertainment, not investment.
July 20: The Feel-Good Finale
And then, the Monday after the con, the Secret Lair x Global Fund for Women drop opens July 20 and runs through August 3 — printed to demand, half the price donated. I already wrote up why this one gets a rare dad-endorsement, so I’ll just say: with everything else on this calendar screaming right now, limited time, go go go, there’s something nice about ending the stretch with the one purchase you can make calmly over two whole weeks.
One last housekeeping note for the Arena players: those free Avengers Assemble achievements expire July 21, so if you’ve been chipping at them like I suggested, the two-minute warning is coming.
How to Survive It
My honest advice: pick your two or three things and let the rest wash over you. Mine are the Friday preview panel recap, the Hobbit spoilers, and the charity drop. Everything else I’ll enjoy through headlines while doing bath time and bedtime like the domesticated creature I am. The firehose doesn’t slow down — but with a calendar, at least you can dodge the spray. See you on the other side of Amsterdam, friends.
