A couple weeks back, when the Festival in a Box: Amsterdam email hit my inbox, I told you my rule for these bundles: if the per-pack math on the included booster display works out close to retail, the Secret Lair goodies are basically a cherry on top. Well, the box went on sale yesterday and we finally have the number: $199.99, limited to two per account, while supplies last. So let’s sit down at the kitchen table and actually do the math, dad-style.
What’s in the Box, Again
Quick refresher on the contents: the centerpiece is a full Mystery Booster 2 display — 24 packs of the chaos-grab-bag set that pulls from all across Magic’s history, which I maintain is the most purely fun sealed product for a returning player to open. On top of that you get the exclusive foil Wild in Bloom Secret Lair drop (the land-themed one with the gorgeous garden aesthetic) plus a handful of exclusive promo cards you can’t get elsewhere.
So the equation is: booster display + exclusive drop + promos = $199.99. Whether that’s a deal depends entirely on what those pieces are worth to you, and that’s where dad math differs from spreadsheet math.
The Honest Assessment
Here’s how I’d frame it. A Mystery Booster 2 display on its own makes up a healthy chunk of that price at typical retail — so you’re effectively paying a premium of some tens of dollars for the exclusive drop and promos. If you were already planning to buy a Mystery Booster 2 box (and if you like nostalgia, you should be tempted — it’s a returning player’s dream draft night), the premium for the exclusives is defensible, especially since festival-exclusive Secret Lairs historically don’t come back around.
If you weren’t planning on a booster display? Then this is a $200 impulse purchase wearing a souvenir hat, and my usual FOMO rules apply in full force. "While supplies last" and "two per account" are pressure phrases designed to make you decide fast. You don’t have to decide fast. You don’t have to decide at all.
The Dad Verdict
For my house, here’s where I land: it’s a genuinely fair bundle for the right buyer — the person who wants a big draft night with friends AND collects the festival exclusives. That’s a real person, but it might not be you, and it’s honestly not me this month, because I’ve got a Hobbit set and a charity Secret Lair already circled on the calendar, and Dad’s hobby envelope is not infinite.
And that’s my closing sermon, same as always: in a month this stacked — Star Trek reveals today, MagicCon this weekend, the charity drop opening Monday — the most powerful card in your collection is the word "no." Play it liberally. The boxes will keep coming. The mortgage, unfortunately, also keeps coming.
