I can’t afford a flight to the Netherlands, but I can afford to sit on my couch with a cold drink and watch Wizards drop announcements like it’s a fireworks show. MagicCon Amsterdam runs July 17–19, the panel schedule is out, and folks — this one’s going to be a doozy. Here’s your dad-friendly guide to what’s coming and when to pay attention.
The Big One: The Future of the Multiverse
The main event is the Preview Panel on Friday, July 17, titled "Reality Fracture and the Future of the Magic Multiverse." Two things are packed in there. First, a deeper look at Reality Fracture, the next in-universe set. Second — and this is the headline — Wizards has said they’ll announce all three of the in-universe Magic sets coming in 2027. Three set reveals in one panel. That’s a whole year of the game’s roadmap unveiled in an afternoon.
For context on the 2027 shape of things: the plan that’s been confirmed is six sets that year — three set in Magic’s own Multiverse and three Universes Beyond crossovers. So this panel is essentially half of 2027 getting named in one go. The speculation machine is already running wild about which planes we’re revisiting, and I refuse to embarrass myself with predictions. (Okay, fine, one: I’d walk barefoot across a floor of face-down morph creatures to see a return to a classic plane. That’s as specific as I’ll get.)
Hobbits and Secret Lairs, Oh My
Saturday, July 18 brings the "There and Back Again" panel — the official kickoff for The Hobbit set’s spoiler season. Yes, we’re going back to Middle-earth, and I have a whole separate post’s worth of feelings about that (coming soon, promise). There’s also a Secret Lair Reveal-a-Thon on the Friday, which historically is where they announce the wild stuff nobody sees coming.
And of course, the Pro Tour is happening at the con all weekend, so competitive Magic’s best will be battling in the background while the announcement cannons fire. It’s the whole hobby, compressed into one Dutch convention center.
How a Busy Dad Watches a MagicCon
Here’s my honest system, refined over several of these: don’t try to follow it live unless the timing’s kind to your time zone and your kids’ nap schedule. The panels get summarized within minutes by every Magic site on the internet, and the official channels post the videos. I catch the Friday panel recap over Saturday morning coffee, and I lose absolutely nothing except the chat spam.
What I’d actually watch for, if you only have bandwidth for one thing: the 2027 set names and settings. Those three announcements will shape the next eighteen months of hype cycles, and if a plane you love is on the list, that’s your signal to start saving your hobby pennies now. The firehose is coming, friends. At least this time we get a schedule for it.
